This announcement is to announce that my latest Earthside book, Survival Rout, can now be purchased as an eBook at most retailers! (Links are here!!)

You guys, I am really excited and proud of this one. This is the 2nd book in the series, but if you haven't read Poison Kiss yet, you should be able to leap feet-first into this one without being too disoriented; my goal for this series has always been to make it accessible in any order, like the series fiction I grew up on. I consider this the best thing I've written thus far, and I hope you all love it.

Survival Rout is the story of a girl with scoliosis (like me!) who is kidnapped to fairyland with her genderqueer demigirl girlfriend (who uses xie/xer pronouns like me!). After their memories are torn away, they have to piece together who they are, what they mean to each other, and how to survive in a hostile world determined to destroy them. And because this is a capital-R Romance novel, you know they're gonna be okay somehow in the end.<3

The book is up at all the eBook retailers except Barnes & Noble Nook (it's been submitted to them, but it hasn't gone live there yet--it should by the end of the week, though!), and if you're interested in a review copy emailed to you, ping me! Or even just a free copy if you're strapped for cash; I know not everyone can afford a book right now, but I'd rather folks have something nice to keep them warm through the holidays. Self-Promotion: Poison Kiss Audio Book Now Available

Poison Kiss is now available as an audiobook from Audible and iTunes! The book is narrated by the magnificent S. Qiouyi Lu, who is a truly wonderful narrator and does an amazing job with all the voices in the book. I immensely enjoyed working with em, and I hope ei and I will be able to work together on future Earthside books.

I may be uploading the book to other outlets, based on reader need; please contact me if you have a preferred outlet you use where you would prefer to buy from. I will also (eventually) have a direct-from-author store up.

Self-Promotion: Poison Kiss on Kindle

I already have a pre-announcement up, but this post is to officially announce that my newest book, Poison Kiss, is available on Amazon Kindle (here!) I'm going to use this post to promote it and pin a few places, so here we go!

Why does the Kindle preview have garbage formatting?

I am sorry about that. There is a known problem with the rendering of the preview page; the Amazon site-maintenance elves were given socks by Jeff Bezos some years back, left the office, and were never heard from again. Here's a picture of what it will actually look like on your Kindle, and I've tested the formatting extensively across multiple Kindle platforms.

When will your book be available on other electronic platforms?

The plan is to have it up on the other major bookselling sites in three months. Barnes & Noble (Nook) is first because they aren't too terribly hard to upload to, but anything I do through Smashwords (Apple, Kobo, etc.) is a nightmare. Smashwords still prefers its authors to upload a Word document instead of a nice clean epub file and that's a big headache. I may need to get professional help for that part.

When will your book be available in paper format?

Possibly never? A paper version will depend heavily on demand, since the upfront costs are pretty high. (Including special page formatting + more artwork for the back cover.) If enough people show interest, I could maybe hold a Kickstarter. I will definitely keep my mind on the possibility!

Will there be an audio book version?

That's the current plan! I'm vetting voice actresses and keeping my ear open. (I would use my Pulchritude narrator but while her voice is like a golden bell, I am looking for an American actress this time.) If you are a woman of color (preferably black or Jewish or both, but I am open to others) who has experience with voice performance and is interested in working for indie wages, please let me know?

Is this book part of a series?

Yes! I have already started the next one; I hope it will be out in a year.

Is this book related to Pulchritude?

No! This is a brand-new series set in modern-day Texas with paranormal magical elements.

Okay, setting the product page description aside, tell me what you like about your novel, Ana.

I'm so glad you asked, imaginary voice in my head!

Poison Kiss is a paranormal romance story with three main characters I adore, but it's also about a community of survivors banding together to protect each other. I love stories about communities; there's nothing wrong with lone-wolf characters, but I've always been more interested in the dynamics of cooperation and coordination--and especially in situations where everyone brings a wide variety of talents and powers into the mix. That interest is probably why I liked Xanth so much as a kid, and why I'll always hold a soft spot in my heart for X-Men.

I'm also thrilled by how diverse this fictional community is. There are eighteen named community members in this book, and precisely none of them are [white + cis + straight + male]. And I didn't even do that on purpose! There's a lot of women of different ages, ethnicities, and body types. There's genderqueer folks and a trans man. There's gay, lesbian, and bisexual people, many of whom are polyamorous. The protagonist, Rose, is a bisexual polyamorous biracial black Jewish woman who is a rape survivor (as part of her backstory; mentioned but not shown directly on-page) who lives with depression and post traumatic stress disorder. Yet this isn't a story which is capital-a About her identities; she just happens to be attracted to girls (just like I am!) while paranormal fantasy shit is going down around her (just like I would be!).

I don't know if I can read a novel that doesn't have a white cis straight man in it, Ana.

There is a white cis dude! He's just not straight. There's also a cis straight man who isn't white. Maybe you can sorta average them out and round up!

You mentioned 'rape survivor'. Is this book going to trigger people?

I hope not! I don't think so? The setting and backdrop of the story is admittedly grim, as this is a story about humans who have been kidnapped by cruel and mercurial faeries to serve as labor, entertainment, and food. At the same time, there's a deliberate fluffiness to the tone that I've worked hard to cultivate and maintain. I've always felt like it should be possible to write about grimdark subjects in a manner that isn't super triggering, and I hope that I've achieved that here. As a rape survivor myself, I want to see protagonists who are like me and deal with the same challenges without the story needing to be A Very Special Episode about sexual assault.

As we are nearing a holiday gift-giving time, I would like to buy this book for my doting silver-haired grandpapa, but I am not sure if he would like it. Is there swears?

There are indeed some swears, I do apologize. There is also a M/F/F sex scene that was hilariously difficult for my shy self to write and edit, but which is probably the most tame M/F/F sex scene anyone has ever created. Though it did spawn a delightfully lively conversation regarding the appropriate words for 'clitoris'. Kristy kept me from using anything egregiously awful, for which I think we can all be grateful.

Does this have a happy ending? You've broken my heart before, Ana.

I know, and I'm sorry. This book does indeed have a better ending than Pulchritude, or I wouldn't call it capital-R Romance.

Is there anything I can do to help promote your work?

Um, it sounds trite but... buy my book? If you've done that already and want to go above and beyond, I love it when people find time to read my books. (No small task, I know; I, too, have a terrifyingly long To-Be-Read list.) And if you've read it and you liked it and wanted to review my book on Amazon or elsewhere, that would be amazing because it really does make a difference for new readers who haven't heard of me before.

Self-Promotion: Pre-Announcement Announcement

So. Okay. Deep breath.

I have published a book! (Okay, yes, another one.)

I wanted to hold off on the announcement until I had a chance to check the Kindle upload, (and I've ALREADY uploaded a minor correction that Amazon has to stew at for 72 hours (lolsob)) so unless you just need it RIGHT NOW, I recommend waiting until Monday (DON'T WORRY I'LL REMIND YOU) to buy. (Though, I mean, it's a minor added sentence and also you probably have updates automatically enabled, so it's OKAY to go ahead.)

Self-Promotion: Blog RSS

For those of you with Kindles but not with RSS readers -- or who just have a burning desire to receive Rambling articles on glorious e-Ink -- there is now a Kindle Blog Subscription to the blog:

The subscription costs a dollar a month (a cost that Amazon apparently sets, because they never asked for my thoughts on the matter) and if I'm reading the fine print correctly I get ~33 cents on the dollar. So that's $4 per person per year if I'm adding that up correctly. Note that all you're getting is blog content -- updated on the Amazon servers every 15 minutes, I believe -- and not the thread comments.

Bloggers in the audience who would like to sign up their own blogs for this service can sign up here. (All you need is an RSS feed address.) The only reason I found out the service existed was because I was looking for "Comics Curmudgeon" on Amazon.

I've tested the subscription on a Kindle Paperwhite -- a recent gift from a relative on the grounds that the training I have to take for work comes only in Kindle e-book form and I couldn't heft the heavy paperback versions -- and it looks pretty snazzy. So if you like this sort of thing, check it out. Note that the "supported devices" seem to be only the e-Ink readers; it doesn't look like the Kindle Fires are on the list. (Which is kind of weird, if true.)

Self-Promotion: Ambling Books

Pulchritude the audiobook is now available on Ambling Books as an MP3 download. While you're there, check out my narrator's link -- she has a whole bunch of free PD books, and her voice is a joy to listen to.

Self-Promotion: Only, Not

A blog-wide request: Please do not create "book records" of my blog-to-book downloads on library sites such as GoodReads. Someone has done this with my Lion-Witch-Wardrobe compilation, and I apparently have to contact GoodReads support and beg them to take down the listing and it's all very inconvenient and unpleasant. So I has a sad this Sunday because of all this.

My blog-to-book deconstructions are unpublished for a reason (and it's not because I'm lazy or can't afford the ISBN numbers). There's a lot of quoted material on my blog, and I feel there's a major difference between posting that material in a blog form (or as a download-of-the-site for people with spotty internet connection) versus publishing the whole kit-and-kaboodle as an honest-to-goodness "book".

In the meantime if there are any GoodReads Super-Librarians in the audience who could do me the honor of deleting the record, I would greatly appreciate it as it beats my scattershot method of randomly contacting total strangers who have "Super Librarian" under their name while waiting for GoodReads to write me back. *sigh*

Update: In my experience, these things usually devolve into huge and emotional derails about Fair Use across various countries, the legality of fan-fiction, and/or the fact that just about anybody can bring suit for just about anything in the U.S.A. Because I do not wish to re-justify my request further in the comments, I have closed this post for discussion.

If the GoodReads people get back to me that merely having the compilation available for download constitutes "publishing", then I will most likely feel moved to remove the download links from the blog entirely. If that happens, I will note that in this post as a comment.

Self-Promotion: Audio Book Version of Pulchritude

There is now an Audible version of Pulchritude available through Audible. It's supposedly also available through iTunes, but I can't find it there. If you're not an Audible fan, you can get snag a complimentary Creative Commons MP3 version here.

(Also, the Pulchritude page on Acacia Moon Publishing now looks nicer. Thought I'd mention that.)

This audio book version cost $500 to create and I start with 25% of the Audible price (which varies based on whether people are members or not, I believe), to be increased up to a theoretical 75% as sales go up over time. But basically I have to sell 100+ copies to earn back the investment on this baby. Since I've sold all of 30 eBook copies of Pulchritude, we'll see. Possibly my next book won't have an audio book version, but I wanted to try this experiment.

Self-Promotion: Distributing For Free

As a new indie author, I'm personally of the opinion that my greatest enemy is obscurity. This is one of the many reasons why my book is distributed with a Creative Commons license that allows (and encourages) sharing the book freely with friends, neighbors, and complete strangers on the internet.

However, this is not always an easy position to take because "distributed for free!" and "distributed widely!" takes a tremendous amount of time. At last count, my novel "Pulchritude" is currently distributed at almost 20 different links:

The Amazon and Smashwords links can be consolidated into a single process, but that's still a lot of uploads and managing. And thus there is a natural tension between Distributing The Old Book and Writing The New Book, since the aspiring indie author is frequently strapped for time.

With that in mind, I'm going to swallow my pride and as for help. I love this post at Slacktivist which gathers up online archival sites that distribute free literature. However! I simply do not have the time or spoons to research each one, determine if they accept Creative Commons books or only Public Domain books (there is a difference and my book is not Public Domain), create accounts at each one, and upload as needed.

So! If you are an archivist, and particularly if you are involved with Open Library or Project Gutenberg, and if you're at all willing to help me distribute "Pulchritude" for free through any of these sites (and/or through any torrents you may have access to), I'd greatly appreciate any uploading that you would do on my behalf.

Self-Promotion: Calling All Indie Authors

Given that -- in the latest poll -- 83% of you are either interested in self-publishing or "maybe" interested in self-publishing, I'm going to start talking about self-publishing more in upcoming posts, including my dream of having a loose community of indie authors coupled under the same label and pooling resources to get All The Nice Things traditionally denied to self-publishers. With that in mind, here's the opening FAQ on the AMP website:

Acacia Moon Publishing is a conglomeration of self-published indie authors who have chosen to pool their titles under a single catalog in order to distribute their books to as many outlets as possible. Our goal is to provide titles through every available marketplace and ecosystem. This lessens the gap between readers and writers, and allows consumers to support authors through whatever means they are most comfortable with.

Authors who publish under Acacia Moon handle their own sales through regular retail outlets, but may also chose to make their titles available to outlets open to larger publishers. Publishing under the AMP label is as simple as using an AMP-purchased ISBN, which marks a book as part of the AMP catalog.

Authors retain full control over their books and all copyrights, as well as the choice of distribution outlets and pricing. The author is paid directly by their chosen outlets and AMP has no legal standing (or desire) to interfere in the sales process. The only effective difference between ordinary self-publishing and self-publishing under the Acacia Moon label is:

1. An ISBN is supplied from the AMP account with Bowker. This allows authors to pool resources to purchase ISBNs cheaply in bulk.
2. A webpage and blogging community is supplied for the author on the AMP website. This allows authors to pool webpage resources and readers.
3. Community help is supplied to the author throughout the self-publishing process. This allows authors to pool knowledge to help each other "get back to writing".
4. Access is provided to sites which serve reviewers and libraries (NetGalley, Overdrive). This allows authors access to sites which require "X-or-more" titles for inclusion.
5. Anthology projects are organized for authors who have short stories ready for publishing. This allows authors immediate dissemination and audience growth.

Readers are encouraged to check out our list of writers and resources, and to visit our blog for details on new releases and insight into the world of self-publishing. Writers are welcome to contact us with anthology collaboration ideas or if they are interested in self-publishing under our label.

J.D. think it could use some whittling, and she's probably right, but it is what it is for the moment until I have a better idea of what parts of this is clear and what parts are unclear. That's where you Interested In Self-Publishing folks come in! What impressions do you have from this? Any questions? Thoughts? Ideas? Does the idea of a community of indie authors helping each other out on a strictly volunteer basis (no, seriously, this is not meant to be Drama, it'll be loose and fun and simple) appeal to you at all or am I dreaming the impossible dream?

Self-Promotion: I Have An Audio Book (That No One Wants To Sell!)

OK, that title was misleading. I'll back up.

Let's start with the good news. For those of you who enjoyed Pulchritude, there is now an audio book version available for download and it's sublime. I need to edit my Official Page to note the wheres and whens and hows and the many thank yous to the beta listeners, but in the meantime here is a link to the direct download. (ETA: Apparently you have to create a Sugar Sync account to view the files. Which is stupid. I'll try to fix that. In the meantime, here is a Dropbox link that doesn't make you do that.) I'll bug you all later in the month when I update my official author page with everything else.

The bad thing, however, is that I would like to sell this audio book to people who are in an ecosystem like Amazon MP3 Cloud Player or iTunes or Audible. I really wanted to do this audio book the same way as the eBook:

Offer it for free to anyone who asks.
License it under a Creative Commons copyright for sharing.
Sell it through existing ecosystems for people who want to "donate" to the cause for the convenience of carrying it in their Audible/Amazon/iTunes account.

That's how I did the eBook. But I'm finding out, dipping my toes into the world of audio books, that audio book sellers are even more pissy about alternate sites with free downloads and Creative Commons than eBook sellers are. If that's possible. (Seriously, read that article. I cried, I'm so frustrated. Creative Commons and free content should be a choice the content-owner makes, not the content-provider. In my opinion.)

So I'm struggling on the business end of things and minorly demoralized. It's okay, we'll get past this. If you'd like to help, you can do things! Here are things you can do if you want to help:

Self-Promotion: Print-On-Demand Version

Greetings and salutations! For the half a dozen of you who wanted a print version of Pulchritude, this is now a thing that exists! (And I am inordinately flattered!)

The bad news upfront: it's not as cheap as I'd like it to be, and I can't afford to give away free copies because CreateSpace does charge me for my own copies. So I'm sorry about that. And I encourage you to read for free before you buy! You can download the ePUB/mobi version or read online on GoodReads!

The print-on-demand price is $7.99. It's a 6x9 trade paperback, so taller and thinner than the mass market paperbacks you may or may not be more used to. For those who are curious, the royalty rate susses out differently depending on vendor:

What that means is that the base price just to print the book is $6.69. The royalties on CreateSpace sales are $2.38 and the royalties on Amazon are $0.78 because the Amazon Cookie Monster likes a higher quality macadamia nut than your work-a-day sugar-cookie-scarfing CreateSpace Cookie Monster. (In comparison, I make about twice that 78 cents on Amazon Kindle sales for my $2.99 eBook.)

Where did March go? I swear it was just here.

Husband and I have finally moved into our new house, which we very dearly love, and we may someday have phone service once again, if we're really good and the phone fairies decide we are worthy of their gifts. But April is bringing some unexpected twists: I've received news that my work assignment is being changed such that I'll no longer have internet access, telecommunting privileges, or having my desk be within a few hundred feet of my car. Husband and I are still trying to work out how this is going to affect our lives, and I'm also in the process of scheduling a surgery. So that should be fun.

But that is not nearly so interesting as blog news!

A "Deconstruction Index" page has been created for quick access to the various book deconstructions in chronological order. There is also a rudimentary FAQ attached to each deconstruction list; suggestions are welcome. As some of you have informed me that you have unreliable internet access, I will be packaging deconstructions as they end in a downloadable format for offline reading. Look for a Claymore version to go up on the index page by the end of April, now that the series is winding down.

In other deconstruction news, Narnia will start back up soon with two different "The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe" film adaptations and then "Prince Caspian". Which I very barely remember from childhood and have already marked up two chapters full of underlines and exclamation points. Fun!

My novel "Pulchritude" continues to be well-received by so many of you, and several of you were kind enough to leave wonderful reviews online. Thank you; I can't tell you how much that means to me. Husband's eardrums ring with the sound of my happy squealing, I'm sure. For those of you interested in a print version, I hope to have one on Amazon by the end of April as I'm almost finished with the proofs. Once I order a copy for my own inspection and can verify that it looks good, I'll post a link so that everyone can join in the fun.

In other novel news, we're still working on an audio book version, but that's not quite half-done yet and I think it will still be a few more months until the audio book is ready for download. Having said that, here's a teaser. (How excited am I about this? SO EXCITED.)

Self-Promotion: Pulchritude TV Tropes

(Note: If you don't like TV Tropes, this post will not interest you. Here is a penguin instead.)

For those of you who enjoy Pulchritude and TV Tropes, there is now a Pulchritude TV Tropes page!

I made it all by myself, because you can apparently do that. What I did do: added a bunch of obvious and/or author intent stuff, in addition to a single index just to be super official. What I did not do: create back-links on the trope pages (I felt shy), link to more indexes than just the one, create sub-pages (characters, YMMV, etc.), add a bunch of other obvious stuff by virtue of the fact that I ran out of steam after the first 20 or so.

What you can do: Go wild.

No, really, once a page is up, everyone has a pretty equal say in what goes on the page, as long as it falls within the various site rules of YMMV and the like. I'd love-love-love to see this filled out into something robust and awesome; otherwise, I'll just have to make a point to fill something in once a week as I find Wiki Walk examples.
