Metapost: Disqus Hiccups

Usually, I receive an email for every comment that goes up on the blog. Today, I have receive zero, which makes it significantly harder to keep up with everything everyone says. (How do you all do it? That Current Comments widget is a life-saver, thank you Chris. Well, and there's the actual feed itself.)

Anyway, I've reported the error to Disqus and in the meantime if someone asks me something directly and I don't answer, there's a very good chance I just didn't see the comment. As always, the Gmail icon in the top left corner is open for anyone to use.

You're welcome.

How do you all do it?

I do it by keeping active threads open in different tabs, using the Current Comments widget to help me know when to refresh which. Right now I have nine, which is towards the big end of the range.

(I feel like I'm repeating myself. The last time I said this wasn't very long ago. Still, you asked.)

Um...if this is inappropriate, sorry, but this community is one of my social networks and I kind of need hugs, distraction, something right now. My city is on fire and I'm trying not to freak out. I live in Colorado Springs - not in a part that's on fire or evacuated, but the Waldo Canyon Fire is, I think, burning down a coworkers neighborhood right now.

Thank you. It's hard not to freak out, even though I'm in no immediate danger. It's just swelteringly hot because I can't open the windows due to smoke. And I'm prepared in case it does become a danger.

And if it does, Colorado Springs is looking at the wildfire equivalent of Katrina, I think.

Ohmigosh, seriously? You mentioned the fires earlier, but I didn't put two and two together. All the {{hugs}} you can possibly hold right now.Distraction, distraction, crap! Um... 8 Bit Theater? Order Of The Stick? Unskippable videos on The Escapist? I don't know what to recommend.

But I can give hugs. So many hugs. Please be safe and okay. :(

I'm safe, I hope. But hugs and distractions are very helpful!

Hard not to run around in circles going "omgomgomgomgomg!" when a wildfire actually hits the edge of your city. However un-useful that is.

Hugs, and take care.

I see from the morning news that the fires are still growing. I hope your home is still safe. Keep in touch.

I hope you're ok. Actually, I hope that not only are you ok but everything got better in the 11 hours since you said that.

Hugs in as many numbers as you want.

For distraction, I don't know, I've found that going through sinfest.net's archives focusing on the Crim Fuchsia relationship can be a pleasant and at times uplifting distraction.

Or, you know, you could try to work out Edward's personality problems to ten decimal places. But that's probably not a pleasant distraction.

I never did get around to saying how I keep up.

I've noticed that most of the page seems to be saved in memory so when I hit "back" it doesn't reload, but notably not saved are the disqus thread and the current comments widget. So what I tend to do is have one tab dedicated to the site, and go through the threads in order. When I see a new comment has been made in a given thread I go back or forward to that thread, once the disqus thread loads (which takes less time than loading a whole page) I can see the latest comment. The only thing that can go wrong is if I click a link in a not-the-most-current thread without telling it to open in a new tab.

Having many days almost completely free helps a lot; generally I just go to the latest threads and manually check their comments, the same way I just tab over to bookmarked blogs to see if a new post has been uploaded. A pretty brute-force solution but I've got a low-tech high-tech mentality going; what I'm good at, I'm really good at, and change baad.

Can someone please post a comment (here or elsewhere on the board) real quick? I think I got it fixed now, but I need a comment to be certain.

Ana Mardoll said...

OH THANK ALL THE ELEMENTS AND A FEW I MADE UP JUST NOW. I just got Chris' Twilight comment.

Pro-tip for Disqus users, if you add NEW sites to your Disqus moderation panel, your notifications split out into checkboxes for each site, and they are defaulted to NO even if you had "enable notifications" turned on previously. *facepalm*

So comments *broke* around the time I added the Test Edits to my Disqus account to test Disqus 2012.

Did diqus crash across the internet a bit ago. The status site said it was fine but for a while I couldn't get anything here or at slacktivist.

chris the cynic said...

So it's the element's fault that that posted when I wasn't done, and indeed in the middle of a sentence?

I do so love the edit feature, I don't know how people get by without it. (Says someone whose blog's comments don't allow for editing.)

Ana Mardoll said...

Lol. Ironically, Edit is why I use Disqus despite all the hiccups. I couldn't bear the lack of an Edit button and the Blogger basic version doesn't have one.

They claim to behaving problems ever since they launched the 2012 beta.
