Recommends: Happy Star Wars Tears

Content Note: Very Light Nudity (No Naughty Bits Shown But May Be NSFW)

If you haven't already seen the Gotye "Somebody That I Used To Know" music video, you'll probably want to watch this first. A friend sent me this and I liked it enough to watch the video eight times in a row before buying the MP3 on Amazon.

Well. Now there's a Star Wars version. And it is awesome.

(Words cannot express how much I love my Husband for managing to combine my love of indie music with my nerdliness and finding this awesome thing for me.)

LYRICS

[DARTH:]
Now and then I think of when I was in power
Like choking people with the Force until they died
But then you told them all my history
And took away my masculinity
And had my character portrayed by subpar actors.

You are now addicted to an overuse of graphics
And making Greedo shoot first? Han shot first.
So when you tried to have the Force make sense
You introduced the midichlorians
And what's the deal with having me be dubbed over (Noooooooooo!)

But you didn't have to change it all.
Make 'em like they never happened and the fans are nothing
I don't even need your love
But you treat me like a Bantha and that feels so rough
No you didn't have to make them blow
Have your friends direct your movies and they'll turn out better.
You think that you don't need them though
What happened to the Star Wars that I used to know

What happened to the Star Wars that I used to know
What happened to the Star Wars that I used to know

[GEORGE LUCAS:]
Now and then I think of all the times I screwed fans over.
I had them believing that the first three films were really done.
But Star Wars will be done my way
I don't care what you have to say
I think that they should let it go
And they'll never get the Blu-Ray of the Star Wars that you used to know

[DARTH:]
You didn't have to change it all.
No more puppets, no more practical effects or nothin'
I don't even need your love
But you treat me like a wampa and that feels so cold.
No you didn't have to sell your soul
Do we really need to watch them all again in 3D?
Jar Jar was an all time low
What happened to the Star Wars that I used to know

[x2]
The movies
(I used to know)
The movies
(What happened to the Star Wars that I used to know)

(I used to know)
(That I used to know)
(I used to know)
(That I used to know)

Edited to add the lyrics.

Last Sunday, on a whim, I went to an indie-theater screening of _Star Wars Uncut_. The director divided Episode 4 into 15-second chunks and a different filmmaker did each one; then he strung them together. It is funny and ridiculous and surprisingly moving. If you ever wanted to see Leia as an old woman dressing down Moff Tarkin; or the trash-compactor scene as interpreted by a box of agitated ferrets..... And I thought it made a strong point about myths belonging to people. The live-action scenes have all genders, all ages, all ethnicities. Who says that just because I'm an old woman I can't play Darth Vader, huh?

I believe you can see the whole thing on the Net, though I think it will play better with an audience around, for the reactions.

Bwahahaha. That is awesome, and I'm sharing it with the Star Wars + indie music fan in my house today. :D

This is amazing. xD I so agree with those lyrics. How I miss the original versions! Han totally shot first.

Heh.

There's actually a fan (or group of fans?) who are spiffing up the originals (and have some plans to do interesting things to the prequels). Zie/They even got a mention on Cracked for making fan art that's better than the original.

Though I've got to say there's something very odd about the fact that Star Trek filk is full of humor and awesomeness about the universe and characters, while Star Wars filk is 90% potshots at Lucas. Okay, maybe that's just me wishing there were Star Trek type filk for the Star Wars universe.

I'm so nerdy that I've watched the Star Wars version at least five times over the past week (every time I see a link to it - it's just that awesome) - and I *still* haven't watched the original Gotye video!

I thought this said "potshots at Luke" at first and I was all "Seriously, I like Luke just fine. Most of the time. He doesn't deserve so much hate. Oh! LUCAS. Nevermind." Ha.

One presumes it's some form of group therapy. (Plus, it's hard to cherish and remember the good things in song when they keep getting tweaked. It's like, "Don't call attention to them! He'll ruin them!")

Most of the songs I would want to write/hear would have to fly in the face of established canon at this point, I think. *sad face* But for all that, I agree with you. :)

"Don't call attention to them! He'll ruin them!"

I think you've got it. Unfortunately.

This is why creative things need to be taken away from their creators at some point. "Nope, sorry, can't change anything now. It's done." There may, somewhere, be something that was improved by a writer/artist/filmmaker going back and fiddling with their creation, but I can think of more times when it was a mistake.

Barring actual errors, I'm trying to stick to a no touchy policy for anything I write. Once it's published/posted it is done. No touchy!

*sigh* And that's hard. My audio book narrator found some errors in my book. We fixed them for the audio version, but I angsted over whether to try to issue a "version 2" with fixes. (Mind you, these were actual grammatical problems, not "Han shot first" things.)

Finally I was persuaded to leave things be, if only because updated ALL the versions is kind of impossible at this point. (Too many stores, too many formats, too many torrents, etc.) But it's something that even people like me who sympathize with No Touchy Policies can be tempted.

In the vein of Star Wars mashups of popular songs: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBM7i84BThE

Star Wars Call Me Maybe. Not quite as nice, as I don't like the underlying song as much, but still pretty funny and nice. The sesame street version (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-qTIGg3I5y8&feature=related) is also pretty good.

Also, sorry I missed the grammatical problems :(

What, for me? Don't be, dear! I'm pretty sure they were added *after* beta reading, in the post-beta-reading edits. :)
