Deals: The Handmaid's Tale on Kindle

PEOPLE! Margaret Atwood's "The Handmaid's Tale" is today's Kindle Daily Deal. This is pretty much my favorite book ever.

I can only assume this was picked because I compared "Bumped" to this book. *fake preening*

A timely post!

My husband and daughter apparently decided that it's time for me to come out of the ink-and-paper Dark Ages, so I got a Kindle for Christmas. This seems like a good place to start.

I rad Handmaid's Tale years ago, and remember not caring much for it, but I can't remember why. Lately, so many people whose opinions I respect are recommending a re-read, that I guess it's time.

It's really lovely but a bit difficult because there is a distinct tension with names. (The narrator, for instance, has no name.)

If you're more of a visual person, there's a movie -- that I'm pretty sure was produced by Playboy, which is...kind of odd to me, but wev -- that is also pretty good, imho.

This is wonderful timing for this, and this is one of the many reasons I keep up with your blog Ana! We apparently have a similar taste in books, and I have a new kindle that needs to be filled up with great reading material.

I'm currently in the middle of reading Bumped, because of your recommendation, and it is surreal* and awesome!

* surreal because it is actually fairly rare that I read books with female protagonists, and I tend to avoid anything that even remotely discusses pregnancy, just not my thing, usually...

I am so glad you are liking Bumped!! I think you will definitely like Handmaid's Tale, in that case, if you've not already read it. :D

OTOH, Handmaid's Tale was my LEAST favorite of the 6 books I read for the Fem. Lit. class I read it for, even though it was one of the three I picked to write the final paper on. (Assignment: Pick one common thread that three novels we read in this class shared and compare and contrast how the theme plays out in those three novels and in any other novel of your choice or in your life.) I bet I still have that paper in a box somewhere. That was probably 23 years ago?

I have not read it yet, but after reading the little synopsis, it is the next one after I finish Bumped!

I find myself thoroughly curious as to what the other 5 were. :D

Two books by Toni Morrison (Song of Solomon and Beloved), and three books I don't remember the names of, 23 years later. I remember the plot of the other one I used in my paper, but not the title or author. (I used Handmaid's Tale, Beloved, and the one I can only remember the plot of.) Clearly the other two were not terribly memorable to me, either in a positive way or a negative way.

Despite not liking Handmaid's Tale particularly much, it's the only one I didn't sell back to the bookstore, but passed along to my mom and sister, who passed it along to an aunt, who passed it along to...??? (I never got it back.)

Not available in Canada :(

Gah. I’m sorry to hear it’s not available in Canada. Geo-restrictions are so stupid – there are a couple of Margaret Atwood books that only the UK (and Canada, maybe?) have. :(

Totally lame. I just got a Kindle for Christmas from Boyfriend and I've run into a bunch of books that aren't available in Canada. Mostly the free classics, which sucks cuz those are the ones I want!! I did end up getting a bunch of them though, so I'm fine for now.

Not... a favorite.

Not even a favorite Atwood.

I'd give it a retry, but I am so darn weary of dystopias, and I have three on my nightstand waiting to be reviewed... Gaaaah.

(Yes, I was a Bad Girl yesterday and read THE STORY OF SAIUNKOKU instead. I have a cold, and felt sorry for myself).

How you tantalise me with your American deals! How do I find out what the deals are on Amazon UK?

cjmr said...

Kit, go to the Kindle store at amazon.co.uk There should be a link off there. (I can't see the Kindle store there, I just get a notice that the Kindle store at amazon.co.uk is only for users with Kindles registered in the UK.)

The UK has some good deals going on right now!

I'll see if I can't fix the links below so that there's a UK one, too. :D
